Gray area,

例句-1:While there are laws that prohibit a church from directly supporting a particular politician, offering suggestions for how to vote is more of a gray area,虽然法律明令禁止教会直接支持某个政客,但向教友建议如何投票却属于合法性模糊不清的做法。

Sports trainers at the professional, college and even high school level are becoming more involved whenever a head injury occurs. But what about when kids who play sports get hurt? That's still a gray area. It's unclear how carefully anyone is paying attention to that age group.

不过,bottled water seems to represent a gray area, 瓶装水在这个问题上似乎没有定论。

例句-2:When you're driving for a company, can you talk or text on your phone? Most employers never had a specific policy. That's no longer true. Because of too many accidents and lawsuits, there are now rules that everyone can understand. There's no gray area: using electronic devices is absolutely not allowed while on the job.

Easy是容易的意思; to go easy on someone or something的意思是温和有耐心地对待某人或某事。 I'd go easy on her.

In this book, Al Capone is almost celebrated as a businessman who makes generous contributions to charities. The author goes easy on his subject. The truth is that Capone was a gangster who made money smuggling illegal alcohol. He also engaged in gambling and prostitution. And let's not forget he had several people murdered!

******

Go easy on something

I grew up in Mexico, where the food can be really spicy. When I cook for my American friends, however, I have had to remember that some people prefer milder flavors. I've gone easy on the hot chilies I knew from when I was a boy. I only put a lot of them in a dish when I know my guests appreciate the bolder taste.

That's why she's been going easy on the salt when she cooks or eats out. 朋友胃酸过多,so she was advised to go easy on sodas and coffee.

http://www.uveau.tw/voanews/words-and-idioms/lessons/996/

那就是:gloss over.

我的朋友?#35805;?#26053;行中的种种不好对人提起,she chose to gloss over all of them.

My daughter likes the sweet icy drinks at our local convenience store. But she's tried to avoid them because they have so much sugar. Now that she's heard that new flavors are being offered with artificial sweeteners, she's excited. I'm not. Because they still have no nutritional value. The company glosses over that information in its ads!

不过,universities don't include those numbers on their web sites. They conveniently gloss over these shocking statistics!

People can be fascinated with celebrities. We love how they overcame great challenges in their rise to success. But often their life stories fail to mention drug or alcohol addictions, problems with relationships or criminal behavior. Indeed, biographers have a habit of glossing over such unpleasant facts.'

19981;?- give and take.

Those who don't appreciate give and take are not likely to listen to others.

It's natural for couples to argue once in a while. But whether those two people will have a long future together often depends on how well they work out their differences. Conflicts shouldn't always be about one person being right and the other wrong. There has to be a healthy give and take. Without that ability to negotiate, couples can't survive.

英文里有句话叫, my way or the highway!

Do you negotiate with others or do you feel that give and take is a sign of weakness?

Our labor union has few complaints with the managers of our factory. That's because everyone works pretty well together. Whenever there's a conflict, we sit down together and discuss the best way to deal with it. Each side is willing to let the other get some of what it wants. That give and take makes for a much better environment.

Get wise to somebody or something The investigators began to get wise to the reckless spending of taxpayer money,

例句-1:Our department is so big. That's why no one noticed that Fred was often out of the office on Mondays. But then the boss started holding staff meetings at the beginning of the week. Soon, she got wide to Fred and his frequent absences. Since she became aware of the situation, Fred hasn't missed a day of work!!

不过说起来,办公室里经常有些人?#20302;?#19978;网买东西,或者网上聊天,then they act shocked when their supervisors have gotten wise to them.

可有一次,我朋友无意间发?#32456;?#30007;人手机中有不少?#29992;?#30701;信,when he knew that she was getting wise to his deception, he stopped calling her.

例句-2:My wife is a smart consumer. She's often alert to products that advertise being healthy when they actually contain too much sugar, fat or chemicals. She also notices when products claim to offer more, but actually contain less. When she gets wise those manufacturers, she blogs about them. She simply doesn't want anyone else to be fooled.

Thanks to these people, I've gotten wise to all kinds of recent decisions by my town council.

http://www.uveau.tw/voanews/words-and-idioms/lessons/993/

After seeing people coming and going from the neighbor's house, I began to suspect there was some funny business taking place,

例句-1:The cop knew the crook was armed and dangerous. When she finally caught him, he was told to throw down his gun and put his hands up over his head. She also warned him not to try any funny business. It was clear that she wouldn't hesitate to shoot if he made any wrong moves.

The cop needs to remain cautious in case there's any funny business,

例句-2:Recently, Paula's husband was busier than ever, and had to go out of town one weekend every month to meet with clients. She started to wonder if there was some funny business going on. Soon enough, she found purchases of women's jewelry and lingerie on his credit card bill. He was having an affair with his secretary!

那就是: full of oneself。

就像上面我提到的这个来面试的人: all the boasting she did led the interviewers to conclude that she was full of herself.

例句-1:It can't be denied that Donald Trump is extremely successful in the business world. Through his many investments and ownership of luxurious properties, he's worth about $2.9 billion. Still, his critics think he's incredibly full of himself. Maybe he wouldn't be so great if he weren't conceited?!

例句-2:Cheryl and I almost didn't go on a first date. That's because my ex-girlfriend lied about me to her and said that I was full of myself. Luckily, Cheryl didn't listen to her. After meeting me, she decided that I was actually not self-important at all. So we started going out and now are thinking about getting married.

http://www.uveau.tw/voanews/words-and-idioms/lessons/991/

She suspected foul play.

例句-1:When I got back to my office, my papers were scattered. I found my file cabinet had been opened and my computer turned off. My first thought was that it was a case of foul-play. But, it turned out to be rather innocent; just my colleague's kids playing around without any supervision.

She discovered that thieves had broken in, and other neighbors had reported similar incidences of foul-play.

例句-2:Police discovered the woman's body in the river. Her husband claimed she had accidentally fallen out of a canoe. Soon enough, it was determined that foul-play was involved. She had been struck on the head with a rock and left to die. The husband murdered her and intended to collect an expensive insurance policy!

It's obvious that my friend's team was the underdog. It was a foregone conclusion that they'd lose the game.

例句-1:Susanna had worked as the assistant manager in the store for three years. When the boss decided to take a job with another company, most of us assumed Susanna would be getting a promotion. It seemed a foregone conclusion. But our predictions were wrong. A new manager with more experience was hired instead.

They were sure the restaurant had to close down. It seems like a foregone conclusion.

例句-2:Some historians believe that the American Civil War was far from a foregone conclusion. In their view, it wasn't clear at all that the North was going to beat the South. It's true that the North had a larger population and greater resources. But, they argue, the South had the advantage of fighting on their own soil. And they had the most experienced generals.

Who will win the presidential election this year is far from a foregone conclusion.

She forced the president's hand.

例句-1:I didn't intend to announce my retirement quite yet. I've told my buddy at work not to say anything to anyone. But after a few too many drinks, he accidentally mentioned that I would soon be leaving the company. I know he didn't mean to force my hand. But I had no choice but to confirm the news.

The honoree will figure out what you're up to and forces your hand,有时被派对主角发现秘密筹备的事,你?#35805;?#27861;只好承认。

例句-2:We shouldn't have been playing basketball in the house. That's how we broke a window in the living room. We must have looked guilty. As soon as mom and dad came home, they asked us what was wrong. We never had time to invent a story because they succeeded in forcing our hand. Now we'll have to do extra chores for a month!
